PV Coin Exchange is proud to present a spectacular and important piece of Civil War history, an 1858-O Seated Half Dollar recovered from the ship wreck of the S.S. Republic. The Republic went down in a hurricane in 1865 while on a journey from New York to New Orleans. This coin was going home, but never made it. Minted in New Orleans, this Seated Half was in Uncirculated or Almost Uncirculated condition when the ship sank to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean in 1865. It was returning to New Orleans to help the city rebuild shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War. In 2003, some of the ship was recovered, including this beautiful coin.
