An exceptional piece of early American history. This Oak Tree Shilling circulated in the Massachusetts Bay Colony when the colonial population (not native) of what would be the entire United States was just about 50,000. For comparison’s sake, the population of downtown Boston is now 650,000. Struck in Boston, this “In at Bottom” example seems to have been folded up at some point, as was commonplace. A clear full date and a clear full oak tree. One of the first truly American coins. Although we don’t know for sure how many were made, we believe around 300 of these survive.
NGC Certifies this coin as Almost Uncirculated Details, Damaged.
