An interesting piece to share with collectors today. We’re pleased to offer a relatively common coin, but an interesting version of it nonetheless. The American Silver Eagle is ubiquitous today, but this nearly perfect specimen is in PCGS slab that includes a hand signed label from the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver. Even so, Mercanti-signed pieces aren’t rare, but they are considerably less prevalent than their rare or non-signed counterparts.

PCGS’ population reports aren’t accurate, but given there were almost 43 million American Silver Eagles Minted in Philadelphia in 2013, the relative scarcity is somewhat important. Only something like 45,000 of those have been certified at Mint State 69. This is a label of the type Mint Engraver Series Mercanti Flag Signature. It’s hard to know exactly how many of this slab variety exist, but our guess is likely fewer than 200 Mercanti signatures in total. Can you imagine having a Morgan encapsulated with the original signature of Charles Barber or George Morgan (both past Chief Engravers)? These seem prevalent now, but 100 years from now this will surely be an interesting and historic keepsake. Mercanti is perhaps most famous for his work on the reverse of the American Eagle.

We at Palos Verdes Coin Exchange are pleased to offer you an interesting and affordable piece of American numismatic history here today.
